AI-900 to AI-901: what changed in Azure AI Fundamentals
AI-900 retired on 30 June 2026. The Azure AI Fundamentals credential now comes from AI-901, and the exam is weighted more toward building than describing.

What actually changed
- The larger half of the exam is now Implement, not Identify. A fundamentals exam that used to be mostly vocabulary now spends most of its weight on building something.
- Microsoft's audience profile asks for knowledge of Python coding syntax and familiarity with REST APIs, SDKs and CLIs — unusual for a fundamentals-level exam.
- Content is organised around Microsoft Foundry rather than the older standalone Cognitive Services framing.
- Generative AI, information extraction and multimodal capabilities carry materially more weight than they did on AI-900.
